Welcome to the 17th

This document will help you in getting started in Arma 3 if you haven't played before, but can also be useful if you are a veteran and want to freshen up.

Movement

Movement

1 - Movement Speeds

Left Control + C will make your character walk, while double tapping C will alternate your stance between 'jogging' and combat pace. Team Leads usually refer to your pacing through the chevron system; walking is 1, jogging is 2, combat is 3. Conserving your stamina is very important as it'll become harder and harder to regain it throughout the mission, so utilising jogging while keeping your weapon down when not in combat helps to reduce your long-term fatigue.

2 - Safety First

Double tapping Left Control will lower your gun, conserve your stamina, and make it harder for you to execute your friends on accident. You can also hit Left Control + ` to turn your safety on and off.

3 - Free Look

Hold Alt (double-tap to lock) to move your head free from your weapon. This is great for when you are watching a spot with your muzzle trained on one approach but need to scan your surroundings without moving your weapon. You can also do this while aiming, allowing you to rotate your aim about 45 degrees left and right from the direction your body is facing. Releasing Alt will snap your weapon back forward.

4 - Stance Adjustment

Left Control + WASD will allow you to cycle through various stance positions. A and D will shift your upper body left and right, respectively, which is particularly useful for popping in and out of doors or around corners. W and S cycle through the eight stances, from fully erect to a nifty prone-lean thing. This is useful for utilizing and firing over awkward cover (too high, too low) or allowing you relatively free movement behind a trench without losing your head.

5 - Weapon Mounting

Pressing C will allow you to mount your weapon on most surfaces, providing you with significantly reduced recoil when you fire. This is vital for higher calibre machine guns, and you can even do it on the ground. Obligatory warning for those who find one of these in their hands, you're meant to hold the trigger down for long bursts, not short.

6 - Weapon Interactions

Left Control + R will let you check your ammo. Tapping F will change between your available fire modes (Semi, Auto, Underslung etc). You can open the DZN Jam menu by using Left Alt + R, this allows you to go through the process of clearing various jams you will encounter in our missions. If you find yourself stuck, ask your battle-buddy or team leader for help.

7 - Pointing

Hitting Shift + ` (the button above tab) will make your character point at something, and if a squad mate is nearby, they'll be able to see a circle in the direction you pointed. Make sure you do this if you see something and it hasn't seen you. Friendly fire incidents happen less when you take the time to PID your target.

8 - Radio Use

Caps Lock is the default transmit key for your short-range radio. Note that not all modsets will see everyone issued a radio for personal usage. Use your num-pad keys to change between short range channels (1-9), these are preset by the mission maker and you only need to know "go to channel 2" means press num-pad 2.

If you are using a long-range radio backpack, use L Ctrl + Caps Lock to transmit over long range, and L Ctrl + num-pad 1-9 to switch your long-range channels.

9 - A few MISC controls

You can hit your [ ] keys to bring up a mine detector if you have one or while in a vehicle to bring up an information panel from navigation to who's in your vehicle. Depending on your seat, you can get different information.

If you have goggles that get dirty, hit Left Control+Shift+T to wipe them.

Left Control + V lets you vault/climb particular objects within reason.

Holding the windows key will let you interact with objects/players (ACE Interact)

Control + Windows will let you self interact with yourself (ACE Interact)

K is your compass

Shift + K will show wind indication, which is helpful when throwing smoke and makes it easier not to have the smoke float back into your face.

Hitting + on your Numpad twice will zoom your vision in, while holding it will zoom you in until release hitting - on your Numpad does the opposite.

Control Scheme Setup

In order to effectively play Arma 3 without mis-inputs and keybind fighting, there are a few control setting changes you will need to make. We will go through all you need to change below.

Keep in mind, you will need any 1 of our Cores loaded to get all of these controls.

First thing's first, open up Controls

Opening controls menu

Once open go to Weapons, and scroll until you get to "Throw"

Throw keybind location

Once you enter the menu, you're going to delete the current key bind and replace it with 2x G. This will ensure that you don't OBLITERATE your squadmates if you happen to have butterfingers, which also means if you decide to play unmodded, you can still use throwables.

Afterwards head to Common and scroll to the very bottom until you see "Last Help", remove or change this keybind so you don't ping our logged in admin.

Finally go back to the main menu and click Addon Options.

Scroll down to "ACE Interaction Menu" and click "Always display cursor for interaction" the checklist should look like this:

That's it for the basics! If you'd like to view our other guides they are all available on our site. We hope to see you in the next op!
